Melbourne Wedding Blog: Wedding Venues

Tell us about your venue. How long have you been holding weddings and how many weddings do you hold per year?

The venue has been a reception place since the 1920’s.  Number of weddings per year vary.  In 2017 we had approximately 67 weddings.

Why should a couple consider your venue over other venues?

Couples should choose The Gables as it is centrally located in a beautiful, tree-lined street.  This grand old-home and its stately grounds provide the perfect atmosphere and sophistication in which to celebrate one of your most important days.  Boasting traditionally decorated rooms, crystal chandeliers, a lead light conservatory, parquetry flooring, sixteen foot ceilings, a sweeping staircase and open fireplaces no detail has been spared in the 115 year old residence.  Whether couples prefer an intimate dinner, cocktail party, lunch or even our award winning high tea.  The Gables and our professional and dedicated wedding coordinators offer personalised service in a truly grand setting.  The venue is exclusive when booking a function and provides a level of service and guest experience that is second to none.

What’s the first thing couples usually ask when they come and see you?

The first thing a Bride asks is what is the seating capacity for our ballroom.  It is 120 guests seated for a formal lunch or dinner.  The other questions is do we do cocktail or garden wedding options.  The answer is yes.

What size functions can you hold/host?

The size functions we can hold include:

Ballroom capacity 120 guests seated or 300 cocktail style

Dining Room has a capacity of 30

Peacock Room has a capacity of 38

Are the couple free to decorate as they like?

The Gables garden was originally designed in 1902 by William Guilfoyle, the landscaper who designed the Royal Botanical Gardens.  The Gardens today are simply magnificent and include a rose covered gazebo, the perfect setting to say I do.  We provide a beautiful outdoor arbor complete with signing table, the use of 20 white garden chairs, a music rotunda, use of six shepherd hooks, with an indoor option with beautiful led light windows, indoor water feature, fireplace and red upholstered chairs.

The couples can have the gazebo decorated to conform with their wedding style and colour, we just ask them or their florist to remove the decorations once the ceremony is over to prepare for the next ceremony.

If your venue is outdoors is there a backup space in case of rain?

We do have the Conservatory indoors as a magnificent back up plan for a ceremony if the weather turns bad.

Could you give our readers some indication of the range of prices for hiring your venue?

Our prices vary accordingly to which package the couple decide to choose.  For example our Formal Lunch on a Saturday is $110 2018 and $120 in 2019 for a 4 hour duration.  Our Formal Dinner on a Saturday is $140 for 2018 and $145 for 2019 for a 5 hour duration.  Off peak discounts are also available from May through to September.

How early do couples need to book you?

Couples generally book 6-12 months in advance.

What time at night can weddings stay at your venue?

We have Wedding Receptions from 6:30-11:30pm in summer with extension options of half hour of $575 and an hour for $875.

What other (if any) wedding services do you offer?

Styling advice to make sure consistency and grandeur.

How can people get in contact with you?
